Basic Tape

Parisian electronic duo Basic Tape have premiered stirring debut single ‘Not Afraid’, which is available today. Having already surpassed 6.5 million plays on Soundcloud, collaborated with Mozambo and frequently topped Hype Machine, the pair recently opened for Odesza and will confirm details of further end-of-year shows shortly.

Uplifting and anthemic, ‘Not Afraid’ effortlessly blends elements of 70s disco, contemporary house and soulful pop into an instant and infectious introduction to Basic Tape. The pair met in the same study group at sound engineering college in Paris, where Sav was born and had made some early experiments in House, and Ben moved to from his then-home of Clermont-Ferrand (where he learnt the tuba, and dabbled in progressive rock). Inspired by the legendary electronic scene in Paris but also the endless possibilities of the internet, the pair soon bonded over a shared desire to leave college behind and make their own beats. They cut their teeth via bootleg remixes – Lana Del Rey, Ellie Goulding, J-Lo – with a DIY approach that also saw them approach blogs themselves and build up an impressive following across Soundcloud, Hype Machine and Youtube. In the process they finessed their own material as Basic Tape, with ‘Not Afraid’ suggesting the arrival of a duo poised for a breakout year ahead.
